Polyester cotton & muslin fabric
2 pieces of each fabric type (4 pieces total), each approximately 7.5" × 9". Polyester cotton (70% polyester, 30% cotton) and muslin (100% cotton) each take natural pigment differently, giving you two distinct results to explore.
Watercolor paper, 140 lb (2 sheets)
One 5.5" × 7.5" smooth surface sheet and one 6" × 9" textured sheet, both 140 lb. The different surfaces interact with botanical pigment in distinct ways — a great way to explore how the medium shapes your results.

What is mordanting?
A mordant is a metal salt that fixes a dye — in this case, the natural pigments from your flora — to a fiber. There are two categories: mordants that work best on protein (animal) fibers, and those that work best on cellulose (plant) fibers.
The fabric and watercolor paper in our Advanced Kit are pre-treated with aluminum acetate, a mordant specifically suited to cellulose (plant-based) materials. Both fabrics in the kit are cellulose-dominant — the polyester cotton is a 70/30 polyester-cotton blend, and the muslin is 100% cotton — so aluminum acetate bonds the botanical pigments effectively to each.
Worth noting: because of their different fiber compositions, the polyester cotton and muslin will each take natural pigment differently, giving you two distinct results from the same flora.

Kits don't include a pounding board, hammer, or fresh flora. The Terry Shop towel, 3/4" oak plywood pounding board, and 12 oz hammer shown here are all available for purchase. Fresh botanicals can be sourced locally — or ask us about adding flora to your order.
