Every flora-pounding party is hands-on, joyful, and one of a kind. Choose the approach that fits how you want to enjoy your botanical creation.
Both paths begin with fresh botanicals, a hammer, and your own creative instinct. The difference is how you choose to preserve the color after the pounding is done.
The original (above) after sun exposure, improper mordant & time + a lasting reproduction (below)
Pound directly onto untreated polyester-cotton, muslin, or watercolorpaper and enjoy the immediate, organic result. Because natural pigments can fade with sun exposure and time, you can scan a favorite piece and have a giclée print made on paper to preserve its image for years to come.
A longer-lasting original
Choose fabric or paper prepared with aluminum acetate mordant to help natural pigments bond more effectively to the surface. This supports better light and color fastness in the original artwork. You can still scan any mordant-treated creation and make a giclée print whenever you want an additional archival reproduction — mordanting and giclée printing can work beautifully together.
On the left is the original Iris Blues, pounded on combed cotton and still in its frame. Sun exposure and an improper mordant bleached the natural pigments over time. On the right is a giclée print on watercolor paper — a lasting way to keep the image of a beloved original.
